Hampton (Virginia)

Hampton Institute (formerly Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute) was created by the American Missionary Association in 1868 as a training school for Black students. From 1878-1923, a division was created for American Indians.
This Indian education program was used as a model for the establishment of Carlisle Institute. Located in Hampton, Virginia, the school is now well known as Hampton University. HU is recognized as a premier HBCU today.
The majority of current students are of Black ancestry and come from U.S. states and countries throughout the world.
